How to set up Astrill VPN on a PC with Windows OS

Installing the Astrill VPN on a personal computer running Windows OS differs slightly with every iteration of Windows OS. Also, the installation differs with the use of servers such as PPTP, L2TP, and IPSec although IPSec and L2TP use similar settings. Flushing the DNS cache on Windows also differs as per the iteration of the operating system. Although Windows currently has five major iterations namely Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10, most users are still running Windows 8.1. Therefore, this setup guide wil focus on this operating system.

Windows 8/8.1

  • How to configure PPTP with Windows built-in client on Windows 8/8.1
  1. Click on Windows+I to jump directly into the Settings menu of the charms bar on the right hand side edge of the screen. There, you will see and click on the Control Panel.
  2. Select Network and Sharing Center in Control Panel then choose on Set up a new connection or network.

  • In Connect to a Workplace screen, choose Use my Internet connection (VPN).
  1. Make sure you Connect to a Workplace screen. Key in GTX1.ASTRILL.NET. For the Destination name, use Astrill PPTP.
  2. You should then connect to a Workplace screen. Use your Astrill account email as your username, and your Astrill account password as the Password and click OK.
  3. Choose the Network icon in tray, right-click on Astrill PPTP, then choose View connection properties.
  • On the Astrill PPTP VPN Properties screen, choose the Security tab. In Type of VPN, choose Point to point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP). Click ok.
  • Clicking on the Network icon in the tray, choose Astrill PPTP. Click the Connect button. To be sure, check your IP address at https://www.astrill.com/check-ip.php
  • How to configure L2TP/IPSEC with Windows built-in client on Windows 8/8.1
  1. Right click on Network Access then single click on Open Network and Sharing Center.
  2. Choose Set up a new connection or network.
  • Choose Connect to a workplace and click Next.
  1. Click on Click Use my Internet connection (VPN).
  2. Enter a server address in Internet address then VPN description ‘Astrill L2TP VPN – LA1′ in Destination name. Click on Create. Servers can be found in the members’ area.
  3. Right click on VPN connection name then choose View connection properties.
  • In the Security tab, pick on Type of VPN as Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol with IPsec (L2TP/IPsec) then Allow these protocols. Choose Microsoft CHAP Version 2 then click on Advanced settings.
  • In the Advanced Properties, click Use preshared key for authentication and use way2stars as your pre-shared key then click OK.
  1. In Networking tab, uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks then OK.
  2. Choose Connect on the VPN Connection name then enter your server credentials (username & password). Click OK. Then wait to see the Connected sign.
  3. Go to https://www.astrill.com/check-ip.php to check your new ip address.
  • How to configure SSTP with Windows built-in client on Windows 8/8.1
  1. Click the combination Windows-I to open the Settings menu of the charms bar on the right edge of the screen. The Control Panel should be clicked next.
  2. Choose Network and Sharing Center then Set up a new connection or network.
  • Choose Use my Internet connection (VPN) under Connect to a Workplace.
  1. Click on Connect to a Workplace. Use GTX1.ASTRILL.NET for the Internet address and Astrill SSTP Destination name.
  2. Click on Connect to a Workplace. For Username, use your Astrill account email. For Password, use your Astrill account password. Click OK.
  3. Click on the Network icon in tray then right click on the Astrill SSTP. Choose View connection properties.
  • On the Astrill SSTP Properties screen, pick on the Security tab. On Type of VPN, choose Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (SSTP). Choose OK.
  • Click on Network icon in tray then on Astrill SSTP then the Connect tab. Check our IP address at https://www.astrill.com/check-ip.php
  • How to configure IKEv2/IPSEC with Windows built-in client on Windows 8/8.1
  1. In Control Panel select Network and Sharing Center. Click ‘Set up a new connection or network’
  2. Choose ‘Connect to a workplace’
  • Select option one or as required.
  1. Select the required server in Server Address such as ASTRILL.NET then the preferred name of the connection. Click ‘Create’.
  2. Go to Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings then right click on the chosen connection and select Properties.
  3. Go to the Security Tab and change the ‘Type of VPN: IKEv2′
  • In Authentication, choose Use Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) then OK to save settings.
  • Click on Network in the windows taskbar then choose the connection then ‘CONNECT’

  • How to configure DNS on network adapter on Windows 8/8.1
  1. Click on Network and Internet.
  2. Choose Network and Sharing Center
  • Then Change Adapter Settings
  1. Right click Local Area Connection
  2. Choose Properties.
  3. Double click IPV 4 then OK
  • Tick the option titled Use the following DNS server addresses then key in 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 respectively then OK.
  • Right-click on Network Adapter.
  1. Choose Status
  2. Select Details. You should see 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as the DNS servers.
  3. Click Close then Close again.
  • Evoke the command prompt with the cmd button then type nslookup google.com then Enter key to confirm the DNS is working for Google.
  • How to flush DNS cache on Windows 8/8.1
  1. Right click on the command prompt key then choose run as administrator to run the cmd utility.
  2. Key in ipconfig/flushdns then the Enter key
  • You will see ‘Windows IP Configuration. Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.’
